A Football Odyssey
In 1991 the #2 ranked (11-0) University of Washington Huskies football team won the Pac-10 Championship and earned a trip to the January 1, 1992 [78th] Rose Bowl; their opponent was the #4 ranked Michigan Wolverines (10-1) from the Big-10. I (Wayne) unexpectedly received 2 tickets to the game near the end of 1991. As it turned out, my folks were going to be in Palm Springs at this time, and I was able to get a round trip plane ticket to Palm Springs a few days before the Rose Bowl. I went to the game with my Mom (Doris). Although I had watched TV coverage of the Rose Bowl many times over the years, this was my first opportunity to see the game in person. I received the 2 tickets from Craig (see Note 2), whom I attended a game with at Husky Stadium earlier in the season.
In 1998 the #7 ranked (10-1) Washington State Cougars football team won the Pac-10 Championship and earned a trip to the January 1, 1998 [84th] Rose Bowl; their opponent was the #1 ranked Michigan Wolverines (11-0) from the Big-10. My folks (Doris & Vermont) unexpectedly received 2 tickets to the game near the end of 1997. My folks were going to drive to the Palm Springs area a few days prior to the game; I was able to get a train ticket from Palm Springs a few days after the Rose Bowl. I went to the game with my Dad (Vermont). My folks received the 2 tickets from a member of their Church. Prior to the 1998 Rose Bowl, WSU’s last Rose Bowl appearance was the January 1, 1931 Rose Bowl.
