I (Wayne) saw some interesting things happen during the ’96 calendar year (see Track_Events_1996_RevNew below). I recorded some notes about upcoming track meets in reference 1. It contained additional notes on Track and Field related programs that would be televised.
When I attended the Prefontaine Classic 1996, the inside cover of the Meet Program contained a note [see note 6 below] that informed me of the “Where It All Began” featuring guest speaker Alberto Salazar at the Eugene Nike Store on 30 May 1996 [see Track_Events_1996_RevNew photo]. As it turned out, I was in Eugene to spectate at the NCAA Track and Field Championships 1996 (4 Days of competition). Hence, I was able to attend the aforementioned event. As I recall, numerous collegiate Track and Field coaches attended the event also [see note 7]. A college coach asked Alberto Salazar the following question: “When you were at the University of Oregon and ran a leg of a 4-X-mile relay at the Florida Relays, who were the other three runners on that relay team?” Alberto answered the question by providing the names of the other 3 runners. If my memory is correct, Alberto said two of the Oregon runners that were on that 4-X-mile relay were Rudy Chapa and [?] Nelson. The 3rd person he named was a U. of Oregon runner, who previously attended a High School in Longview, WA (my home town); the runner’s name is Bruce Green, and he attended Robert A. Long High School in Longview between ‘72 and ’75. I alluded to him in Note 1 of MyReflections_HS_Track_RevB_pg_5 (see Note 4 below). His mile time is at the top of a list of Southwest Washington Sub-District Track Winning Times [see Note 5 below, photo: SWW Sub-District Track Winning Times over multiple years (ascending mile times)]. Although I’m not 100% confident about the names of the first 2 runners Alberto provided, the names are plausible since reference 4 listed the last names of all four Oregon runners in a “pre Pac-8 Championships track meet” list for the 1,500 meters event.
