The Goodwill Games were hosted by Seattle between 20 July and 5 Aug 1990.
Prior to the 1990 Goodwill Games, I (Wayne) bought tickets to three days of Track & Field competition. I had four tickets for the first day of Track & Field [i.e. “Day 3” of the Goodwill Games]. Norm and Valdeane came up to Seattle from Kelso. And Steve was out here from St. Louis. I served elk burgers for dinner. We then went to Husky Stadium to watch the evening meet.
I thought the women’s 3000m run was one of the most exciting events during the Track & Field competition. The U.S. Team placed first and third in that event (see reference 1).
On the third day, after the competition was over, my Dad and I were walking away from the Stadium, when I saw PSP [placed 1st in the women’s 3K two days prior (see paragraph above)] warming down after competing in the women’s 1500m run earlier in the evening; I asked her to sign my ticket, which she did. I had a brief, but meaningful, conversation with her. Later that week I decided to write a letter to PSP (care of Seattle’s 1990 Goodwill Games [Track & Field Team]). On 8 November 1990 I received a nice letter back from PSP that was much appreciated (see photos below)!
It was the summer of 1990, and I was still certain that there was a bigger story that needed to be told...
