As recorded in Wayne’s Journal: My dad (Vermont) and I (Wayne) were spectators at the 1993 Pac-10 Track & Field Championships (5-21-93 through 5-22-93), which were held in Berkeley, California. We did not attend the multi events part of the track meet, since they were held the previous week.
I picked up a car rental in Seattle at noon on May 20, 1993. I then picked Vermont up, and we continued our drive toward San Francisco. That evening we arrived in Yreka, CA and stayed in a motel. The next morning we got up at 4:45 am and drove to Berkeley in time to pick up tickets prior to the meet. We purchased General Admission tickets to Edwards Stadium. I bought a program for the 2-day competition (see Reference 1).
I had my camera, that I intended to take some photographs with, However, due to a film load malfunction, only 3 photographs from the trip turned out (see photos below).
After Day 1 of the competition ended, I was thinking about going to the Giants baseball game because Bud Black was pitching that night for the home team. However, I’m glad I didn’t got to that game because it was one of the 2 games Bud lost that year.
Prior to the 2nd day of competition, we went to Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. Many of the shops at the Wharf were still closed when we arrived. We found a family restaurant that was open for breakfast (see note 2). After breakfast I rode on a cable car. We then drove to Edwards Stadium. The track meet started at noon. Vermont, as usual, was very observant during this meet. I remember him recognizing a person at the meet who was the MVP of the 1991 Rose Bowl. It didn’t surprise me to find out that the aforementioned UW student was at this meet because I already knew his wife (see reference 2) was a runner for UW and participating at this meet. I sat next to her father previously at a UW track meet in Seattle and he told me the aforementioned information.
After the meet ended at 4:30 pm, we drove to Shasta, CA, and stayed in a motel. The next morning we stopped for breakfast and saw a hot air balloon land nearby (see photos below). I dropped Vermont off, and I returned the car rental in Seattle at 8:20 pm. The total (round) trip mileage we drove was 1,637 miles.
