As recorded in Wayne’s Journal, I (Wayne) was a spectator at the 1993 NCAA Track & Field Championships, which were held in New Orleans, Louisiana, between June 2nd and June 5th, 1993.
On June 2nd, I checked out the Riverwalk this morning, where I ordered breakfast and read the newspaper (see reference 1, 2).
At 5:30 in the evening, I went to Tad Gormly Stadium to attend the first day of the NCAA track and Field Championships. I purchased a reference 3 track meet program.
My seat was directly in front of a couple from Seattle; their daughter was a star sprinter for LSU’s women’s track team (see reference 1, 2). Additionally, I sat next to a couple who had a son registered to attend Millsaps College and play football there in the Fall. I told them I attended a NCAA Division III college in Illinois that played Millsaps when I was a Freshman; and I was on the football team also.
On June 3rd, I went to Day 2 of the NCAA track meet at 5:30 pm; I bought the reference 4 meet program.
The following day (June 4th) I went to Day 3 of the NCAA Championships meet at 5:30 pm. When I first got to the stadium, after buying the reference 5 meet program, I went to the West side seating, and found myself a seat that was in the shade. The head coach of Washington State University (see note 2) sat down near me. He was spectating at the meet also. Hence, I initiated a conversation with him. I told him that I was surprised to find out that Lasse Viren used Arthur Lydiard’s training techniques. He acknowledged that this was so. He went on to say that because Africa boycotted the ’76 Olympics, a fine runner who attended WSU couldn’t run at the Olympics in the men’s 5K because of the aforementioned boycott.
I then walked to my assigned East side seat. The announcer at the meet mentioned that the Decathlon 1500m World and Collegiate records are held by Robert B., who went to “Prin” (see note 3). The woman sitting next to me, whose son will attend Millsaps College, realized I had attended “Prin” also. I told her that I was on the football team with Robert when I attended “Prin”.
June 5th was the final day of the NCAA Championships meet. I went to the track meet that evening. I bought the reference 6 track and field meet program. The reference 7 article indicated that the women’s 4X100m relay final will be re-run due to a problem that occurred during Day 3 of the competition. No doubt the parents of LSU’s star female sprinter, who were sitting behind me, were very interested in this race, since their daughter was the anchor for that relay team. Of course they were interested in the women’s 100m and 200m finals also. Some results of the 4th day of competition were given in reference 8 through 13 (see photos below).
