A Track & Field Odyssey
In July/August of 1990 the Goodwill Games were held in Seattle. Wayne purchased tickets to the Track & Field events. It was a wonderful opportunity to be able to witness some spectacular athletes perform at Husky Stadium. Many of the performances became track & field records for Husky Stadium. During the decathlon, a former college teammate of Wayne’s (see Note 2 below) was mentioned as the current world record holder of a single event in the decathlon--the 1500 m run. At the time, Wayne didn’t fully understand how to convert a 1500 m time to an equivalent mile time; hence, it was decided to explore a method that would allow for such a conversion. This effort led to Wayne attending track meets in Seattle, Tacoma, Pullman (WA), Eugene (OR), Berkeley (CA), Tempe (AZ), Boise (ID), Austin (TX) and New Orleans (LA). The specific meets included U.S. National Championships, NCAA Championships, Pac-10 Championships, High School Championships, College meets, High School meets, and of course the Prefontaine Classic. This effort resulted in the creation of a Track Table that gives comparable times for different distances (metric/English). It was a fun project, and it even required some calculus to derive some of the equations. During this time there were some interesting letters to the editor in Track & Field News pertaining to converting a 3K to 2 mile time (this was especially interesting as a magical 8:00 two-mile was definitely on the horizon, but the 3K had been run more frequently). Wayne was able to do some site seeing during these trips too. It was fun to talk to a variety of people. And it was cool to witness some inspiring performances along the way. During this period Wayne believed there was a “bigger story that needed to be told”…
