As recorded in Wayne’s Journal: On 26 June, 1993, a friend of mine (Liz) and I (Wayne) picked up Juli at her place in Seattle. We stopped for coffee at a nearby coffee shop. We headed out of town at 10:00 am, which was a later start than I expected, but stopping for coffee was definitely worth it!
We reached the Sunrise Mine Trailhead and were hiking at 12:20 pm. We reached the switchbacks below Headlee Pass at 2:45 pm. We stopped there and had lunch. Beause Liz had an appointment back in Seattle that evening, we turned around at 3:00 pm. As a result, we did not make it to the pass. This was fine with me, since I had done this hike before [see notes 2 and 3].
On the hike back, Liz took a photo of Juli and I [see first photo below]. I was wearing a T-shirt that I purchased recently while attending the 1993 NCAA Track and Field Championships, which were held in New Orleans [see note 5]. We reached the trailhead, and were driving at 4:35 pm. We were back in Seattle at 6:30 pm.

Note 2: On 21 Aug, 1982, a friend of mine (Vickie) and I hiked the Sunrise Mine Trail for the first time. Beyond Headlee Pass, we set up camp on the ridge that goes up to the summit of Mt. Vesper. We then found the old miner’s trail that led us to the upper mine shaft. It was filled with 1 or 2 feet of water. The next day we climbed from our camp, to the summit of Mt. Sperry via the SW Slope route (p. 48 of reference 1).
Note 3: On 1 Sept. 1985, I returned to the Sunrise Mine Trail with a friend (Mike). We started hiking at 10:30 am. We set up camp in the middle of the basin below Headlee Pass. We then hiked up beyond the pass to the lake below Mt. Vesper summit. We enjoyed picking short-bush huckleberries. We got back to camp at 6:00 pm. The next day Mike and I attempted the South ridge route on Sperry Peak; we got within 300’ of the summit, before retreating.
Note 4: On 17 July 1988, I attempted to climb the NE Ridge (see p. 48 of reference 1) of Mt. Sperry with a friend (Erich). We left the car at 7:30 am. We were fairly high on the route when we decided to retreat at 5:00 pm. After down climbing, and 5 rappels, we reached a dry patch of heather that was flat; it was 10:15 pm and nearly dark, so we decided to have an unplanned bivouac. The following morning we got an early start (5:30 am) and reached the trailhead at 8:00 am.
