When I (Wayne) was growing up in S.W. Washington, the nearest big city was Portland, Oregon. It was about an hour drive away, and we occasionally attended sporting events, went shopping, or visited friends or relatives there. Of course we spent time along the Oregon Coast. And we went on a family vacation to Crater Lake National Park.
