Northern California Redwoods Trip - 2017

As recorded in Wayne’s Journal: A friend of mine (Juli) and I (Wayne) went to the Northern California Redwoods while on vacation in 2017. After stopping at the Visitor Center, we arrived in Crescent City on August 9th. We were able to get a camp site at Mill Creek campground. We then drove the Newton B. Drury scenic road.  We saw some redwoods along this road.  We continued to Elk Meadows; there were a half dozen bull elk in the meadows.  One was on the edge of the meadow. The elk was rubbing velvet off its antlers. It had a large rack.

On August 10th, we had breakfast; and then headed South on the Redwoods Highway. We drove to Orick, where we got groceries and ice.

We then went to Lady Bird Johnson Grove and hiked on the 1.5 mile trail walk.  The old growth redwoods were impressive!

On August 11th, Juli and I drove along Howland Hill Road, which took us to the Stout grove.  We hiked along the Nickerson Ranch trail. We then went to the Stout Loop. We took a side trail across the Smith River.

After that, we drove to Tolowa Dunes and went for a mile hike [one way] on the beach.  We had dinner at the campground. We went to the camp fire program that evening, which was good.

On the morning of August 12th, we had breakfast, and then picked up camp. We started our drive back to Seattle at 7:10 am.
