Flap Jack Lakes, Gladys Divide, Murdock Lakes - 2001
A steep, but nice backpacking trip, is to go to Flap Jack Lakes. The trailhead is at Staircase Ranger Station, near L. Cushman. On one of my earliest backpacking trips in the Olympic Mountains, Nancy, Mike and I briefly stopped at Flap Jack Lakes, when we backpacked into Smith Lake in the ‘70s. On Labor Day weekend (2001) I returned to Flap Jack Lakes solo, and stayed a couple of days. I took a day hike to Gladys Pass; hiked over Mt. Gladys, and dropped down to Murdock Lakes. On the way back, I saw fresh black bear tracks on a snow field; being on a solo trip, the tracks certainly got my attention!
